A fire place grate holds your firewood in place, keeping it off the ground. It is typically made from rustless steel bar. They come in different finishes, shapes, designs and sizes. The bigger your fireplace is, the longer and wider you will want your grate to be. You could try building a fire directly on the ground surface of your fireplace like you would a campfire, but generally this is not as safe, as firewood typically falls in when it burns through, and having a fire grate will prolong the life of your fireplace floor and keep it cleaner.
